Tre Scalini
Jun 29, 2011
Three something or others, according to our fantastic translation skills.
We went to Piaza Narvona, the mecca for Rome tourist restaurants, and played hard to get as the local restsuranteurs tried their best to lure us into their restaurants.
"Our food is not frozen" - I'll pass on your ice cream then!
"Mine is the best restaurant here" - Then why is it empty?
"Free glass of prosecco".
"2 free glasses of prosecco..."
On and on it went.
So we plonked ourselves down in a restaurant that fitted our requirements - upmarket food for Tom, something cheap and nasty for me as I wasn't hungry.
We shared mussels and clams in a spicy white wine sauce served over croutons.
For mains Tom had fish wrapped and baked in potatoes which tasted much nicer than it sounded. I had lasagne that sounded better than it tasted!
Judging by the signs it seemed that each restaurant had an ancestor who had invented tartufo. Either someone was fibbing or had had an ancestor who got around a bit! We tried the "original tartufo" at our restaurant and it was lovely. Best one we'd ever had!
