Delhi Belhi

Delhi Belhi
Jul 09, 2011

Either someone is having a laugh calling their Indian restaurant something we all hope never to experience, or someone is having even more of a laugh by telling the proprietors that this would be an excellent name for their restaurant... either way we were so sick of endless continental cuisine that we decided to chance it at the Delhi Belhi.
We arrived to find it a dark dingy hole in the wall, with a few outside tables that were already occupied. We were beckoned into the gloom, and once acclimatised to the darkness after a solitary candle was lit on the table, we noticed it was quite eclectically decorated, and we noticed the owners shoes....
The menu was pretty standard and we went ahead and ordered a chicken reshmi kebab and onion bhajee to start, and prawn changezi (king prawns sautéed with onions, bell peppers, green chilli peppers, ginger and enhanced with spices), and chicken jal frezi (chicken sauteed with green and red peppers, ginger, fresh hot peppers, onions, tomatoes and spices).
Chicken appetiser was delicious and the onion bhajee was served in individual deep fried pieces, rather than a blob. It worked very well.
Both mains were very nice, but when they arrived we realised we had ordered two dryish dishes, so there wasn't a lot of sauce. I think the naan we had was the best we had had in years, crunchy and light.
Tom asked the owner if mangos were in season, and she said that they had the best mangos that are only in season in July and which they get flown in from New Delhi. We had to order one. I have to say that having tasted it, I think she's right, it was the best mango ever!
Talking about best ever, brings me back to the owners husbands shoes. He was wearing the coolest pair of white Ali Baba style shoes I have ever seen, and he was nice enough to let us take a picture of them!
